Activities
The partner group of the Max-Planck-Institute
for Radioastronomy (MPIfR) at the
National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC) was founded by
the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG)
according
to the agreement between the MPG and the Chinese
Academy of Sciences for the studies on magnetic fields in galaxies.
- Foundation of the partner group
- 2000 Jan. 11: First idea of the partner group by R.
Wielebinski
- 2000 Feb.15: Application to CAS
- 2000 Mar.15: Application to MPG
- 2000 June 28: Good referee remarks to MPG application
- 2001 March 26: Approval from CAS
- 2001 April 19: Official opening
of the
partner group (more pictures), R. Wielebinski visited NAOC
- 2002 January: Grants from NAOC for initialization.
- 2002 January: Grants from MPIfR every quarter.

Sun visited MPIfR (for survey software development).
- 2002 Nov. 25th -- 2003 May 27th: Mr. Maozhen Chen visited MPIfR (for the
construction of the 6cm system).
- 2003 July 22th - Oct. 22th: Mr. Xiaohui Sun visited MPIfR (for
survey software development).
- 2003 Oct.1st - Dec.20th: Mr. Maozhen
Chen visited MPIfR (for 6cm system assembly).
- The 6cm receiver system: Mission
- 2004 May/June: Strong efforts to get the 6cm receiver in site
(largely delayed!) and extensive attemps for the installation of the
receiver
- May 19th: MPIfR engineers/astronomer, Dr. H. Mattes, Dr.
Peter Mueller,
Mr. Otmar Lochner, arrived Beijing;
- 21th: Dr. Matters gave a talk on
"Improvement of the Effelsberg 100m telescope and
current developments of the Electronics Division"
- 22th: Three engineers participated the celebration of MPG-CAS
30th anniversary for cooperation.
- May 23th-June 9th: Urumqi:
- They tried to install the 6cm
system.
- Failed due to lack of some parts and the solution for the
box-size problem.
- J.L.Han and X.H. Sun travelled to Urumqi for helps.
- 2004 August: Second extensive work at Urumqi:
installation of instruments and software, and tests.
- 5th -- 25th: MPIfR Engineers: Mr. Otmar Lochner, Mr. Joerg
Klein as well as Mr. Thomas Lochner visited Urumqi for installation of
6cm receiver (hardware) and tests.
- 5th -- Sept. 25th: Mr. Xiaohui Sun traveled to Urumqi to
participate installation and tests of the 6cm system and follow-up
observations.
- 12th --29th: MPIfR Astronomer, Dr. Peter Mueller visited
Urumqi
for software test and developement
- 17th -- 28th: MPIfR Astronomer, Dr. Patricia Reich visited
Urumqi for software test and system tests.
- 17th -- Sept.2nd: MPIfR Astronomer, Dr. Wolfgang Reich
visited Urumqi for the 6cm system tests and observations.
- Sept.3rd: Dr. Wolfgang Reich gave a talk at NAOC on the new
progress of the 6cm system.
- 17th -- 24th: JinLin Han travelled to Urumqi for
coordinations and installation of the 6cm system,
- 17th -- Oct.??: Mr. Weibin Shi travelled to
Urumqi to participate 6cm system tests and follow-up observations.
- 18th/19th: First light of 6cm
system: Beam pattern is great!
- 29th: News in Chinese. (Some
one make it in English, and even to
other medium!). See news
in good English and also used by other medium!
- 30th: Tests results: system temperature ~20k, one of the best
over the world!
- 2004 Nov. 25th: Idantified the interferences from Idian
satellites (by Xiaohui Sun, JinLin Han, Chen Wang, Maozhen Chen,
Wolfgang Reich)
- 2005 Jan.11-April.4th: Jun Ma visited MPIfR for three months,
in the frame of partner group, for study of the system maintaince.
- 2005 April 5th-10th: Otmar Lochnor visited Urumqi to check the
impact of satellite interferences to the receiver.
- 2005 Nov.2nd-Nov.23: Otmar Lochnor visited Urumqi and Beijing,
installed the filter against the Indian Satellite and the cabin-top
foil and control equipment which stablize the receiver level.
- Now, the 6cm receiver started work
perfactly ---- with maintaince by Mr. Jun Ma and MaoZhen Chen.

pulsars and magnetic

radio sources (together with Wolfgang Reich, Ernst Fuerst & Richard
Wielebinski).
- 2004 May 27th-June 4th: Prof.
Wielebinski visits NAOC:
- gave lectures on "The morphology
of radio pulsars" and "Observations of warm/cold gas in galaxies" (also
lectures in Beijing Normal University and Peking University);
- gives instructions/advises for
construction of 50m & 40m radio telescope in China.
- 2004 Sept.3rd: Dr. Wolfgang Reich
gave a talk at NAOC on the new
progress of the 6cm system.
- 2004 Oct.13rd-23th: Prof. Wielebinski
visited NAOC to discuss the projects and give lectures and receive the
guest-professor-ship.
- 2004 Nov12.-25: Dr. Wolfgang Reich
visited Urumqi and Beijing, and made a lot of test observations for
calibrations.
- 2005 Jan 13rd-25th: Prof. JinLin Han
visited MPIfR, conducted the major part of the RM survey of strong

- 2005 March 07th-16th: Dr. Wolfgang
Reich visited Urumqi and Beijing, and made a lot of test observations
for calibrations.
- 2005 May15th-July15th: PhD students,
Mr. Xiaohui Sun and Mr. Weibin Shi, visited MPIfR for two months,
working with Drs. Wolfgang and Patricia Reich for 6cm polarization data
and finish the paper for the Supernova Remnant, Cygnus Loop.
- 2005 Sept.2nd-7th: Dr. Wolfgang
Reich, Prof. Enrst Fuest and Dr. Peter Mueller visited Urumqi
Observatory for more tests on absolute calibrations.
- 2005 Sept.4th-17th: Dr. Roland Kothes
visited NAOC and Urumqi Observatory for SNR studies.

Reich visit NAOC and Urumqi for the system test of the filter against
India Satellite, and discuss the observational plans.

frame of the partner group and for the further cooperation, Dr. Xiaohui
Sun comes to MPIfR for the Post-doc for one year.

Richard Wielebinski visit Beijing for the series of lectures of
Radioastronomy.
- 2007 Feb.1st-15th: Prof. JinLin Han
visit MPIfR for the RM sky projects.
- 2007 Feb.1st-March 31st: Ms. Li Xiao
visit MPIfR for the S147 project.
- 2007 May 10th-23rd: Dr. Wolfgang
Reich visit NAOC and urumqi, for participating the evaluation,
observing and receiving the guest-professorship.
- IAB meetings
- 2002 July 26: Informal meeting of International
Scientific Advisory Board members at National Astronomical
Observatories, Beijing,
discussed the research goal of the partner group.
- 2004 Oct. 18th: Evaluation of the partner group
by International Scientific Advisory Board; Prof. R. Wielebinski, Prof.
R.-J. Dettmar and Dr. T. Landecker visited Beijing, together with Prof.
Gang Zhao, Prof. Guojun Qiao (as a deputy of Prof. Jiansheng Chen),
listened the reports from members of the partner group. Dr. T.
Landecker and his wife also visted Urumqi Observatory afterwards.
